In a village in the north of Scotland, three
brothers work in a farm. They are bored. They want adventure.

Three brothers work in a farm |
The baby brother is the most handsome brother.
The middle brother is the second most handsome brother. Alphonse is the oldest.
He feels responsible.
|
The baby brother is the most handsome brother |
One day they decide to go to war for adventure.
In the village there is a party to say goodbye to the boys.
- Brothers,
tonight there is a party to say goodbye. There is dancing and singing. And
girls.
|
There are girls at the party |
But the baby brother is frightened of girls. He
feels terrified.
- Are
you more terrified of girls than terrified of war?
- Yes,
says the baby brother.
Paula and her friends are at the party. Alphonse and his brothers arrive.
|
Alphonse and his brothers arrive |
- Brothers,
remember. The last night it is very important to have fun.
They see the girls and they start talking.
Paula says:
- Alphonse,
war is not an adventure. War is not a game. War is terrible, horrible,
dangerous.
- Paula,
listen. Forget about the war. It’s a party. Let’s dance. I love dancing. I’m a
fantastic dancer.
|
And they all dance |
And they all dance.
Paula likes Alphonse. He is good-looking. He is
intelligent. He is handsome. Alphonse is her man. Alphonse likes Paula. They
fall in love. The three brothers fall in love with the three girls.
|
They fall in love |
Alphonse promises he will write a letter every
day. Paula promises she will be here after the war. It doesn’t matter if war is
long.
- Paula,
I love you.
- Alphonse,
I love you.
The three brothers go to war. The brothers
write letters every day to their girlfriends. For one week, two weeks, one
month, six months. But one day the letters stop. No more letters. A year passes
by. No information. One day Paula receives one letter from the Government, an
official letter: Alphonse is alive. He is coming home tomorrow by train. Paula
is excited. And the brothers? Are they coming? They don’t know. Maybe.
Alphonse comes back to the village. He gets off
the train. He is a little bit different. Paula doesn’t recognize him. Alphonse
can’t see, he is blind. A bomb exploded in his face. And the brothers. They are
dead. The girls are sad.
|
A bomb exploded in his face |
Paula still loves Alphonse. They walk every day
and she describes everything:
- Can
you hear the birds? Can you hear the trees? It’s October, autumn. Can you smell
the flowers?
- Paula,
you are my eyes. I can see everything in my imagination.
They go walking and walking and after six
months, they get married.
|
They get married |
Paula’s friends think Alphonse is terrible. He is
ugly. His eyes.. his nose… his face… he is a monster!
|
He is a monster |
One day a famous doctor comes to the village.
An eye doctor: an ophthalmologist. Maybe he can help. Maybe Alphonse can see. They go to see the doctor.
- - My
husband is blind.
|
They go to see the ophthalmologist |
|
The doctor checks his eyes |
The doctor checks Alphonse’s eyes. It’s possible
to help: an eye transplant. But it’s expensive.
- How
expensive?
- It
depends on the colour, says the ophthalmologist. Brown eyes are five thousand.
Blue eyes, ten thousand.
- That
is very expensive. Have you something cheaper?
- Well,
green eyes: one, five euros; two, ten euros. But sometimes green eyes have
psychological problems. You know green is the colour of jealousy. Sometimes
green eyes make the person jealous, possessive, crazy.
- My Alphonse jealous, possessive, crazy? That’s impossible.
|
My Alphonse jealous? That's impossible! |
They want one green eye. So, the doctor takes the green eye and Alphonse
to hospital. After two weeks in hospital, Alphonse comes out
with his new eye. He can see but there is a little problem. He sees everything
green. Paula is all green. Birds are green. Flowers are green. Trees are green.
The sky is green.
|
Who is that? |
They go walking. Paula’s cousin says “Hi”. Alphonse
gets angry:
- Who
is that?
- - He
is my cousin
Paula’s uncle says “Hi”. Alphonse gets angry:
- Who
is that?
- He
is my uncle
Paula’s grandfather says “Hello”. Alphonse gets
angry:
- Who
is that?
- He
is my grandfather.
- Paula,
I don’t like you talking to other boys, to other men.
- But,
Alphonse, they are my family.
- No.
From now on, you don’t leave the house. You stay here. You are mine.
- No,
Alphonse. I’m sorry. I love you. But I’m not yours.
Paula stays in the house. Alphonse is jealous.
He is crazy because of his green eye. One day Alphonse falls asleep and she
escapes. She goes to see her friends. She needs help.
|
She needs help |
They help Paula. Green is the colour of
jealousy. They try a different colour. Red? No, it’s the colour of anger. Blue?
No, it’s sad. A different colour. They think and think and finally they go to
the shops and buy some pink sunglasses. In English if you see life in pink, you
feel good.
|
Alphonse sees life with his pink sunglasses |
Alphonse feels good now with his pink
sunglasses. Alphonse and Paula are happy again.
And they
lived happily ever after
